DCL have been commissioned by PMB Holdings, to provide civil, structural and geo-technical engineering for an extensive redevelopment of Berwick Street in the heart of London’s Soho district. PMB Holdings entered a joint venture agreement with Westminster City Council in 2012. The scheme includes the regeneration of Hopkins Street and the Berwick Street Market, the introduction of new affordable family housing.
The 1960’s concrete structure does not match modern building standards so significant light-weight reinforcement has been required to add two new set-back stories to the current podium building. To achieve this we deployed carbon fibre sheets, an innovative solution that provides real value for money.
Our expertise in city centre regeneration enabled us, through historical mapping, to discover that the area was the site of an important English Civil War battle — although of course, no visible signs remain after three-hundred years of development.
By adding two stories, we will change the use of the main building from office space into a 110-bedroom hotel, PMB Holdings have chosen a new brand; Hub by Premier Inn.
The building structure will be partially retained and the existing retail units on Berwick Street will be given new frontages and refurbished throughout with improved basements.
